Beyond a Business

Because of the pandemic, many people are experiencing financial hardship or isolation from their loved ones; everybody has new needs. Using our imaginations and connections with our neighbors, we can visualize a better future for one another. If you had all the money and materials you needed, how could you help your community? Design and describe a community-focused organization or business that serves others. Think beyond the traditional ideas of what a "business" has to be. What kind of place would you design without any constraints?

  1. 1. The next time you go for a walk or run an errand, look at your surroundings. What do you see? Take note of what already exists and what doesn't. Based on your observations, make a list of ideas you have for a new business in your town. Money and materials are no object; you can be practical or creative. You can address simple needs or aim to solve a broader issue in your community.
  2. Think about your community-focus business. What is it called? What does it do for people? What services or goods can people find there? Call somebody who might use your new business, and ask them if they think your idea for a company will help others and how?
  3. Design a poster to advertise your community-business. Include a logo, the name of your business, an image or drawing, and a sentence that explains your business's mission. Post the flyer somewhere in your community and take a photo.
  4. Post your photo documentation using the submission form at the top of this page!
